Taobao vs 1688: Retail and Wholesale Explained

Taobao and 1688 are both Alibaba platforms. Find out why Taobao is mainly retail and 1688 focuses on wholesale.

A product spreadsheet may link to Taobao for one item and 1688 for another. Both belong to Alibaba, but they serve different purposes. Alibaba calls Taobao a retail platform for shoppers and 1688 a wholesale marketplace in China. This difference helps explain why the two pages may show different kinds of product and seller information. The platform name tells you where a link leads; it does not tell you whether a particular item is good.

How Alibaba describes Taobao

Alibaba's Taobao overview dates the platform to 2003 and describes it as consumer-facing retail with a broad assortment of goods and services. The Taobao app connects shoppers with Taobao stores, Tmall brand stores and other parts of Alibaba's ecosystem. A Taobao link therefore identifies a consumer marketplace, not one particular seller or product standard.

That retail orientation helps explain why an individual item page can feel familiar to a shopper: a merchant presents a specific offer within the broader platform. The platform description is useful context, while the item's current options and terms come from its own page.

How Alibaba describes 1688

Alibaba's 1688 overview identifies it as a domestic wholesale marketplace founded in 1999. The company describes a source of products for Chinese e-commerce that brings together wholesale suppliers across industries. It also describes expansion beyond traditional business-to-business buying toward smaller businesses and consumers. This history explains why a 1688 offer may emphasize procurement terms that differ from a Taobao retail page.

“Wholesale” does not mean every visible amount is a one-piece consumer price. Quantity breaks, specifications and selected options can change an offer. A 1688 URL alone also does not identify whether a merchant is a factory. Those details must be read on the particular listing.

Why are Taobao and 1688 still different?

Alibaba's company material groups Taobao and 1688 within its commerce businesses while distinguishing retail and wholesale activities. Its 2024 announcement about a new e-commerce business group named both Taobao and the 1688 Marketplace, along with several other services. Sharing a corporate group does not make the marketplaces interchangeable. They serve different commercial purposes and may expose different item information and buying terms.

The company's descriptions also show why “retail versus wholesale” is a better starting distinction than “cheap versus expensive.” Taobao is organized around consumer shopping across many store types. 1688 describes itself as a product source for Chinese e-commerce and procurement. Neither description compares the same item at the same quantity across the two platforms. A meaningful price comparison therefore needs the selected specification, quantity and transaction terms, rather than the platform name alone.

A spreadsheet that calls both links simply “Alibaba” hides this useful difference. At the same time, it would be misleading to say every 1688 item costs less than every Taobao item. To compare two offers, you would need the same product, the same quantity and current prices on both pages. Alibaba's descriptions tell us what each marketplace is for; they do not provide a price ranking for the individual items listed there.

What can the platform name actually tell you?

Taobao and 1688 name two different marketplaces within Alibaba's businesses. Taobao is presented as a consumer shopping platform, while 1688 is presented as a domestic wholesale marketplace. That difference helps explain why one product page may be written for an individual shopper and another may emphasize procurement or quantity. It does not prove that two similar-looking offers contain identical goods, or that a particular seller is a factory or an authorized brand partner.

When comparing pages from the two platforms, describe the difference precisely: one is a retail marketplace and the other has a wholesale focus. A lower displayed number on 1688 is not, by itself, evidence of a lower cost for the same item. Quantity, selected options and the current terms of each offer all affect a meaningful comparison. Alibaba's own business descriptions establish what the platforms are; they do not rank the quality or value of the individual listings hosted on them.
